Why I Still Book Hotels Through a Travel Advisor (Even as One Myself)

In the age of online booking sites and travel apps, it’s easy to assume that planning your trip is a simple DIY job. But even as a travel advisor — or perhaps especially as one — I still choose to book my hotels through trusted programs and professional networks. Why? Because there’s far more going on behind the glossy website listings than most travelers realize.

Here’s what you don’t see on booking engines:

🌟 That suite upgrade that could’ve happened if you’d booked through a partner.

🍳 The daily breakfast for two that’s complimentary — not a $60-per-day surprise.

🛎️ The welcome amenity, the early check-in, the late checkout… all things that often come standard through a travel advisor but are invisible on public sites.

As a Canadian, I’ve also noticed that loyalty perks and packages often cater to U.S. travelers first — or come with fine print that excludes us entirely. That’s why working with someone who understands the nuances (and limitations) of Canadian travel is so important.

Through Fora, I can access insider-only programs like Virtuoso, Marriott STARS, Hyatt Privé, and more — giving my clients real VIP treatment at top hotels around the world. The rates are often the same (or better) than what you’d find online, but with meaningful extras that elevate the entire stay.

And here’s the best part: My planning services come at no extra cost when booking hotel stays through me. The hotel compensates advisors directly — so there’s no markup or hidden fee.

🧯Myth #1: “A travel advisor will cost me more.”

Nope — not for hotel bookings. When I book a hotel for you, the rate is typically the same as what you’d find online — and sometimes even lower — but comes with added perks: room upgrades, breakfast, hotel credits, and more. I’m paid by the hotel, not by you.

🧭 Myth #2: “I can find all the same perks on my own.”

Not quite. While some loyalty programs offer benefits, many of the best perks are locked behind invitation-only programs — like Virtuoso or Marriott STARS — which are only accessible through vetted travel advisors. These aren’t things you can simply “click into” on Expedia or Booking.com.

💬 Myth #3: “But I like being in control of my trip.”

You still are. I work with you — not instead of you. Think of me as a travel stylist: I’ll present curated options based on your needs and taste, and help you make the final call. And if something goes wrong? You have someone to call who knows you and has your back.

Yes, there’s a time and place for booking a quick flight with points on your favorite airline app. But when it comes to where you’ll spend your honeymoon, anniversary, girls’ getaway, or dream trip? You deserve better than a soulless confirmation number.

You deserve someone who knows you. Someone who curates with care. Someone who’s already done the research — and will advocate for you if anything goes sideways.

That’s why I still book hotels through a travel advisor. And I hope you’ll let me be that person for you.
